What Are Board Shorts?
Board shorts are a type of swimwear and casual wear that is long and extends around the knees. They are typically longer than swim trunks, and many other types of shorts or form-fitting speedo-style swimwear. They’re popular for water sports and beach activities.
The name “board shorts” comes from their use in water sports that involve a board, like surfing. In Australia, people also call them “boardies,” and in South Africa, they refer to them as “baggies.”
What Are Swim Trunks?
Swim trunks are another type of swimwear that’s great for swimming. Designers create them from quick-drying, thin, and smooth fabric, and they include a mesh lining to help drain water and keep sand out. The fabric often features fun patterns or prints to show off personality.
Compared with board shorts, swim trunks are a more traditional and historical name. A long time ago, people wore underwear that covered most of their bodies. This included the “trunk” area, which is the torso and abdomen. In the past, swimsuits didn’t merely cover the trunk; they often extended all the way down to the feet.
So obviously, swim trunks have evolved a lot since then, but the name has stayed the same.
Are Board Shorts Swim Shorts: Similarity and Difference
Similarity
Both board shorts and swim trunks use similar materials, mainly polyester, spandex, and nylon. People do not often use cotton for these shorts. They are designed for water sports so the fabric must dry quickly and not soak up water. For this reason, we leave out cotton and use quick dry materials.
In manufacturing, these materials are sewn together using a woven method instead of a knitted one. This method offers better water resistance and makes the fabric more breathable.
Difference
boardshorts vs swim trunks – there are still some big differences.
1. Length
The most noticeable difference between the two is their length. Board shorts are usually longer, often reaching knee length with an inseam of 7 inches or more. Swim trunks, on the other hand, are typically shorter, hitting around the middle of your thigh with an inseam of about 3-5 inches.
2. Fabric
Swim trunks usually have better breathability and dry faster than board shorts. Board shorts are not as strong in these areas.
Swim trunks usually use a thinner fabric, while board shorts use a thicker fabric. Specifically, swim trunks have a lower GSM (grams per square meter), while board shorts have a higher GSM. For example, popular swim trunks fabrics like pongee and peach skin fabric have GSMs around 70 and 105, respectively. In contrast, common board short fabrics like Taslan and 4-way stretch fabric typically have a GSM of 120 or higher.
In terms of durability, the fabric used for board shorts is generally better, as it tends to be thicker.
3. Mesh
Swim trunks usually have a liner. This liner helps with drainage and keeps out sand. It also provides some protection, acting like built-in underwear. This mesh liner is essential for preventing chafing during water activities and is considered a must-have in swim trunks. For board shorts, however, this liner isn’t always included.
4. Details
Board shorts mainly use fixed waistbands while swim shorts prefer elastic waistbands. And board shorts often feature a front-fly opening. The elastic waist highlights the functional distinctions between the swim trunks and board shorts.
On the back of the shorts, swim trunks typically have drainage holes to help release water and prevent ballooning. Board shorts, on the other hand, often use Velcro and a fly flap.
What Do You Wear Under Board Shorts?
This question depends on the situation. If your board shorts have a mesh liner, they function similarly to swim trunks. If they don’t, you might want to consider wearing underwear underneath.
When you wear board shorts in the water, avoid cotton underwear. Cotton absorbs water and gets heavy. This can feel uncomfortable and unhygienic. Instead, consider wearing stretchy underwear made of polyester or nylon. This type of swim trunks is popular among swimmers and surfing enthusiasts for their comfort and style. However, if it’s your first time wearing them, you might find them slightly less breathable.
Which One Should Choose?
The final choice depends on your specific needs and personal preferences.
- Swimming vs. Surfing: If you are swimming, swim shorts are a better choice. They are made for swimming and provide more comfort. So for the beach and swimming pool, swim trunks are better. While for surfing or if you’re considering casual wear, wearing board shorts is a great option.
- Style preference: Do you prefer longer or shorter shorts? If you like shorter styles, go for swim trunks; if you prefer longer ones, choose board shorts. For everyday use, you can even cut out the netting in swim trunks for extra comfort.
All in all, the one that fits your personal style is always the best.
